Souks in Fez, Morocco

Writing
Walking over the crooked stones
lining the conurbation of hilly alleyways that
form the medina of Fez, the smell of mule dung
hangs in the musty air, as it has for over a
thousand years. From the 11th to the 15th
centuries, this was North Africa’s epicenter of
commerce, science, and religion. Saints lived and
died here. Kings chose it for their thrones.
Bartering still means boisterous haggling while
shopkeepers offer sweet mint tea. Transporters
yell “balak!” (Clear the path!) leading
overburdened animals of labor.

The Dot-Gone Era
31/08/07 15:59 Filed in: Technical
Writing
As the proverb goes: If we don’t
learn from history, we are bound to repeat it. The
infamous dot-com era spanned roughly from the
mid-1990s to the early 21st century and taught us
much we shant forget: companies spending fruitless
millions, expansion, and growth; all for the
bottom-line. While only a few survivors of the
dot-gone epoch remain with us today, a new
generation of savvy online entrepreneurs is
willing to take risks. But this time, they are
following a business model based on lessons
learned.

In times past, the difference between
Fahrenheit and Celsius were the only
degrees
people were confused
about. Nowadays, the degree debate evolves around
brick-and-mortar institutions versus online
campuses. Numerous questions arise and virtual
establishments that meet modern students’ diverse
needs are rapidly surfacing. In a world of
competition, the Internet classroom is evening the
odds for everyone to pursue their career or life

Whether you are sipping a latte on
the patio or enjoying an early-morning pick-me-up
beside the campfire under the stars, a satellite
might have its eyes on you. Think no one will
notice that extra sugar cube you just put into
that steaming cup? Well, think again. Satellites,
hovering way above our lovely blue planet, are in
our midst.

More to Korea than Kimchi

Kimchi wasn’t always as hot as it is
today. In Manchuria, some 3,000 years ago, it was
an effective way to pickle mineral-rich vegetables
that would last through the harsh winters. Only in
the 18th century did the red pepper, especially
its powerful powder form, smolder mouths
throughout the peninsula.

The AI Future

Predictions of a world where androids
walk amongst us have captured our imagination for
decades. The desire to construct a machine-brain
akin to our own has been the pursuit of Artificial
Intelligence (a.k.a. AI) experts since the famed
Dartmouth Conference in 1956, which coined the
term for the first time. With greater
understanding in the cognitive sciences,
warp-speed advances in computer technology, and
researchers using the Apple Mac OS platform,
science fiction is becoming reality.

The Sirens of Jeju Island
05/07/07 18:05 Filed in: Travel
Writing
Off the shores of Jeju-do (Cheju
Island), nowhere close to the ancient isle of
Capri in the Tyrrhenian Sea, you might hear a
strange, distant sound echoing off the seaside
cliffs of Songsan (Sunrise Peak). Odysseus, who
might have heard similar alluring sounds as he
rapidly plugged his mates’ ears with wax, knew
that the peculiar melody meant certain death if
the ship approached too close. However, unlike
Odysseus, you won’t have to tie yourself to the
mast to witness these sirens of Asia — the haenyo
divers of Jeju.

Imagine yourself back a long time
ago, over two hundred years ago. Now, imagine that
you didn’t speak English, but were living in
France, in Paris perhaps, speaking the beautiful
French tongue. Now, stretch your mind even more
and think for a moment what it would be like to be
accused of being a criminal. Maybe you’re
innocent; maybe you’re not. This would all be
strange indeed!

The Apple Groove

Those dancing to iTunes in Apple’s
neon magazine ads might just be those who own a
good stake in Apple stock. Perhaps we should call
it iStock? Since Apple, Inc. CEO Steve Jobs has
taken over the company, almost exactly ten years
ago, the company’s limits match their
headquarters’ address at 1 Infinite Loop. So,
what’s going on at Apple lately? Does the future
look rainbow bright? And, what are we Mac
aficionados advising Apple, Inc. do to truly rock
& roll?
